eLearning CE: Activity 3-Terisha-Ann Tan (6)

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of India. He led India to freedom is the 1930s. He believed in non-violence and still got people to do what he said. He spent severa years in jail and yet he never gave up. His main goal was to free India from British colonization. Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist. He ate simple vegetarian food, experimented for a time with a fruitarian diet, and undertook long fasts as a means of both self-purification and social protest. One of the things he did is the Salt March to Dandi from 12 March to 6 April, where he marched 388 kilometres (241 miles) from Ahmedabad to Dandi, Gujarat to make salt himself. Thousands of Indians joined him on this march to the sea.

Gandhi is
  • Humble-He went on diets and protested along with his people
  • Peaceful-He encouraged non-violence and decided to protest with peace instead
  • Spiritually Strong-He was very prayerful
  • Determined-He never gave up despite his people being imprisoned and the wars
  • Wise-He knows what is right and is full of sayings

Adolf Hitler- Commander of The Third Reich

Hitler conceived of his role in terms of a duty to restore Germany to a great power, and this belief in the importance of his historic mission, shared by the German nation, enabled him to take on the characteristics of Weber's 'charismatic leader'. Hitler's own perception was a romantic notion of an artist with a vision, rather than a politician with an aptitude for running a state machine. As such he could transcend official bureaucratic procedures in governing the country and he relied on German support to do so.

The traits I see in him are:

1. Determination - He did not give up in the war. He didn't even surrender. He committed suicide.
2. Humble - He did not say he had "The Ultimate Power". He knew about his weaknesses. Even though he blamed his followers for it.
3. Strategic Mind - He carefully worked his way to conquer the whole of Europe, slowly but surely.

Sorry if this is too late, but my internet connection was down for the whole afternoon.

BARACK OBAMA
Integrity: So that people know that he can be trusted
Respect: So others respect him
Fairness: So others will be fair to him
Citizenship: So the citizens believe in him
Caring: So others care for him
Confidence: So people will want to be like him
Mindful decision making: So he can solve problems easier
How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?
-He stays calm, thinks about a feasible solution to solve the crisis and asks for others help and opinions.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Md Ada Syafiq (19)

General George Smith Patton Jr. was one of the most brilliant soldiers in American history. Audacious, unorthodox and inspiring, he led his troops to great victories in North Africa, Sicily and on the Western Front. Nazi generals admitted that of all American field commanders he was the one they most feared. To Americans he was a worthy successor of such hardbitten cavalrymen as Philip Sheridan, J. E. B. Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest.

His great soldierly qualities were matched by one of the most colorful personalities of his period. He was trust worthy, daring, he always planned ahead for scenario's that had almost a 1% chance of happening. He also had quite high expectations for his soldiers. For example, during the battles that took place at the western front, he pushed his soldier's to advance forward overtime so as to reach a stranded battalion which was pinned down in a small village and because of General Patton, soldier's lives were saved as his battalion moved in to help defend against the Nazis. But despite his high and challenging expectations, he cared for his soldiers. General Patton went through a lot of high-ranking officers just to ask for steel helmets for his battalion to wear when going into battle instead of the standard issue tin helmets that were given to soldiers of that time and because of that, all the tin helmets that were given to the US soldiers were exchanged for the steel variant.

Lee Hsien Loong

Lee Hsien Loong went to Nanyang Primary school and received his secondary education in Catholic High School. He subsequently studied in National Junior College and He studied Mathematics in Trinity College, Cambridge University, where he graduated in 1974 with First Class Honours in Mathematics and a diploma in computer science [ with distinction ]. He also went on to obtain a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He also joined the SAF and became the youngest Brigadier General in Singapore's History. He retired in 1984 to enter politics and became a member of parliament the same year. He excelled in everthing he did, so as a leader you have to make the right decisions, and I also think that leaders do not command excellence, they build excellence. Excellence is "being all you can be" within the bounds of doing what is right for your organization. To reach excellence you must first be a leader of good character. You must do everything you are supposed to do. Organizations will not achieve excellence by figuring out where it wants to go, then having leaders do whatever they have to in order to get the job done, and then hope their leaders acted with good character. This type of thinking is backwards. Pursuing excellence should not be confused with accomplishing a job or task. When you do planning, you do it by backwards planning. But you do not achieve excellence by backwards planning. Excellence starts with leaders of good and strong character who engage in the entire process of leadership. And the first process is being a person of honorable character.

eLearning CE: Activity 3-Esther Tiey(03)

To some people, leadership means power and respect. To some, including me, it means responsibility. To you, what does being a leader mean?

Sometimes, there is a misconception that when you are a leader to a certain body or team, you have the power and will gain respect from your subordinates. It is not only visible in public bodies, like our government, it also exists in private companies. For example, some people wanted to be the president - of the country or of a company - just to enjoy these benefits, without really knowing what being a "true" leader means.

I remember some of my officemates in a call center I used to work. Some of them are too thirsty of power that whenever there is a vacancy for a higher position, they apply even though they don't comply with the requirements. Well, I am not discouraging anyone for moving forward. But my point here is that "You should know you are ready to take the higher step because that step requires bigger responsibility."

I know it feels good to be the leader because you'll feel you are higher, respected, bowed, powerful, etc... but isn't it better if you are respected because you are the leader by it's true meaning - not just by word?

Being a leader does not mean blaming your subordinates for the mistakes and faults that happen within your team or taking credits for your own. Being a true leader means being responsible to face blames and give credits to the whole as part of the team. Being a true leader means knowing how to care your team and how to fight for them no matter what.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Kat Yong Jie (14)

Key Trait #1: You must have a vision.
  • Learn to paint a picture with words. Speak it, write it, draw it, touch it. Whatever methods you can use to create a picture, do it. As they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words."
  • Ask each of the other managers in your company to tell you, in their own words, about the vision of the company. How close is it to what you thought they understood? Is your team on the same page as you?
  • As you work, your company's vision should be in your mind every day, and you should reevaluate it occasionally so that it stays current with the changing times in which we live. And remember, your staff needs to be just as involved as you in keeping it up to date if you truly want them to buy in on the vision. Be sure to keep your key players involved.
  • Key Trait #2: You must have passion
  • Your employees want passion; in fact, they'll go to the ends of earth because of it, live and die for it. Think of the sailors who traveled with Christopher Columbus or Leif Ericsson to explore uncharted territory. Their leaders' passion inspired them to take on new and very dangerous challenges.
Key Trait #3: You must learn to be a great decision maker.
Some leaders have a set process, and others fly by the seat of their pants. But you don't want to be one of those leaders who consults no one before making a decision, announces the change the next day and then gets frustrated when no one follows it. If you're one of those, I urge you to implement a set process.

Key Trait #4: You must be a team builder.
When projects aren't on track or your team is falling behind on deadline, it serves no one if you start pointing fingers. This is when you need to rise to the occasion and inspire confidence in your employees, to let them know you support them and ready to help. Be ready to alter plans and make new ones. Don't forget to use humor to keep your team's spirits up during a crisis. When an emergency hits, your team will look to you to be a tower of strength and endurance.
Key Trait #5: You must have character. Without character, all the other "keys" are for naught. That's because your innate character strengths and limitations play a critical role in your leadership style. The real question is, are you aware of just what role they play? All great leaders have taken steps to learn about their individual personality and what part it plays in their leadership style.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 -Irfan Danial(12)

ce activity 3

  • Honest — Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. Deceptive behavior will not inspire trust.
  • Competent — Base your actions on reason and moral principles. Do not make decisions based on childlike emotional desires or feelings.
  • Forward-looking — Set goals and have a vision of the future. The vision must be owned throughout the organization. Effective leaders envision what they want and how to get it. They habitually pick priorities stemming from their basic values.
  • Inspiring — Display confidence in all that you do. By showing endurance in mental, physical, and spiritual stamina, you will inspire others to reach for new heights. Take charge when necessary.
  • Intelligent — Read, study, and seek challenging assignments.

  • Imaginative — Make timely and appropriate changes in your thinking, plans, and methods. Show creativity by thinking of new and better goals, ideas, and solutions to problems. Be innovative!
I think a good leader has to calm down and think of all the possible methods to resolve the problem. Ask the team members to vote for the best idea then start with it.

CE eLearning Activity 3 Yap Boon Pin

It is not easy to be a leader. A leader should be honest, competent, forward-looking, inspiring, intelligent, fair-minded, broad-minded, courageous, straightforward and imaginative.

First of all, a leader must gain trust from his/her group members, which he/she must be honest.

The leader should make wise decisions base on the situation and reasons and not base on his/her feelings.

Effective leaders set goals and have a vision of the future. The vision must be owned throughout the organization. Effective leaders envision what they want and how to get it.

And being fair is very important. The leader shall not treat one unequally. The leader should also courage his/her group to strive for the goal they aimed.

Leaders should also make timely and appropriate changes in their thinking, plans, and methods. Show creativity by thinking of new and better goals, ideas, and solutions to problems.

I personally thinks that when there is a stressful situation for the leader, a good leader would sit down, think carefully and quickly how to manage the situation and once they get an idea, they would immediately try it out.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Desiree Lee (2)

Many great leaders are similar in some ways, some ways that make them such good leaders. Leaders are very enthusiastic in whatever work they take part in and whenever they take part in work, they always work well guiding a team of people. They also show lots of confidence in whatever they do. That's what make people so confident in them. They are very smart and respectable. And things usually go their way. Leaders have good communication skills so they can help people around them, and when a leader guides, it's not bossing around, it is helping. A leader also should be friendly, so that his teammates will approach to them to discuss about their issues. And lastly, the most important, a leader must have the ability to inspire and influence, that's what make them so great!

I think many great leaders always remain calm, even in the most stressful situations. They sit down and not panic, they try to think of the best way to solve their problems. For example, the many presidents who have to deal with stressful situations all the time.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 Peng Kang Xiong (20)

Leaders know what their mission is. They must also have a vision that needs to be abstract enough to encourage people to imagine it but concrete enough for followers to see it, understand it and be willing to climb onboard to fulfill it, as well as goals that need to be operational; that are specific and measurable. Apart from these, leaders must be seen by their advisors, stakeholders, employees, and the public as being an expert in their field. A wise leader assembles effective teams of experienced, credentialed, and capable individuals who can supplement any voids in the leader's skill set.
Most importantly, they must have ambition. a wise leader assembles effective teams of experienced, credentialed, and capable individuals who can supplement any voids in the leader's skill set.
Basically, the leader needs to "be out there" for whoever he or she is leading and show them why they are in that position.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Jasmine ( 04 )

Traits Of A Leader

There are as many traits of a leader as there ae lists of what makes a leader. Here are the fundamental traits of a leader from my perspective:
  • Has integrity. People have to believe that you are pursuing your dream because it's the right thing to do, not just because you are ego driven.
  • Is a people person. Understands the differences that make people unique and is able to use those individual skills to achieve the goal.
  • Is positive. A leader encourages and rewards people and makes you want to do it and do it right. A leader is not a negative person and doesn't waste time and effort tellng everyone what they're doing wrong.
A good leader would stay calm and think of solutions when under stressful situation. He would try to  analyze the question and then try to fit the solutions to the situation. Only then they would start acting.

Source for Jonathan Tan's post (13)

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Jonathan Tan (13)

Although there are some generic leadership qualities that all leaders need to develop, the leadership qualities that are required to make a good leader can vary in different companies, teams and situations.
This can be illustrated in both art and modern leadership models. For example, the fact that leadership qualities are dependent on the context is demonstrated in the play The Admirable Crichton and the film Twelve O'Clock High.
In "The Admirable Crichton", written in 1902, the Lord and butler swap their roles as leader and servant as the situation changes. On a desert island, the butler's practical skills are essential for survival, whereas the Lord's knowledge of English politics is of no value.
In the film "Twelve O'Clock High", produced in 1949, as a squadron starts to suffer increasing losses during the war, the leader's people-oriented approach starts to fail. He is replaced by a dictatorial bully who turns the squadron round and restores their pride (in a modern setting, such leadership behaviour would often be regarded as unacceptable).

Barack Obama

Traits that he possesses:
- confidence
- respect for others
- integrity
- fairness
- citizenship
- caring
- mindful decision making

Under a crisis, a leader will:
- stay calm and think about a possible solution
- discuss his solution with other experienced leaders and get their view of the situation and about his solution.

eLearning CE: Activity 3- Sylvia Soh(5)

What traits do they possess?

They are all highly intelligent, conscientious, self-efficient, open to experience and is able to adjust to change freely. They are righteous and work hard to become a great leader. They fight for honor and justice for their people.

How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?

I think a good leader will first throughly analyze the current situation then calmly think of a solution. Discuss his solution with other experienced leaders and get their view of the situation and about his solution. Only after that will he apply his solution to try to end the crisis.

A leader is one who strives to make an impact on the world whether it may be on the people around him or on the world.A leader is also one to take the opportunity to "be the change"instead on waiting for another person to do it.Leaders also build excellence in its followers and do not command excellence of their followers. An excellent example is Mohandas Karamchand Ghandhi. He saw the people suffering around him and therefore launched a non-violent protest to help the nation

eLearning CE: activity 3 Abiyyu Arif Rahman (7)

a leader must have traits such as:

  • Honest — Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. Deceptive behavior will not inspire trust.

  • Endurance - a leader should be able endure any suffering. If not, the leader would be stressed out and the group would be suffering even more
  • Decisiveness - a leader should know how to weigh all the pros and cons of the choice quickly.

He/she also must have these attributes:

Standard Bearers

establish the ethical framework within an organization. This demands a commitment to live and defend the climate and culture that you want to permeate your organization. What you set as an example will soon become the rule as unlike knowledge, ethical behavior is learned more by observing than by listening. And in fast moving situations, examples become certainty. Being a standard bearer creates trust and openness in your employees, who in turn, fulfill your visions.

Developers

help others learn through teaching, training, and coaching. This creates an exciting place to work and learn. Never miss an opportunity to teach or learn something new yourself. Coaching suggests someone who cares enough to get involved by encouraging and developing others who are less experienced. Employees who work for developers know that they can take risks, learn by making mistakes, and winning in the end.

Integrators

orchestrate the many activities that take place throughout an organization by providing a view of the future and the ability to obtain it. Success can only be achieved when there is a unity of effort. Integrators have a sixth sense about where problems will occur and make their presence felt during critical times. They know that their employees do their best when they are left to work within a vision-based framework.
