It is not easy to be a leader. A leader should be honest, competent, forward-looking, inspiring, intelligent, fair-minded, broad-minded, courageous, straightforward and imaginative.
First of all, a leader must gain trust from his/her group members, which he/she must be honest.
The leader should make wise decisions base on the situation and reasons and not base on his/her feelings.
Effective leaders set goals and have a vision of the future. The vision must be owned throughout the organization. Effective leaders envision what they want and how to get it.
And being fair is very important. The leader shall not treat one unequally. The leader should also courage his/her group to strive for the goal they aimed.
Leaders should also make timely and appropriate changes in their thinking, plans, and methods. Show creativity by thinking of new and better goals, ideas, and solutions to problems.
I personally thinks that when there is a stressful situation for the leader, a good leader would sit down, think carefully and quickly how to manage the situation and once they get an idea, they would immediately try it out.
